Wonderful Indian Wars sepia toned image on maroon mount carrying imprint on reverse for Cross’ Niobrara, Nebraska studio, ca 1878 - 1890. Titled: Padani and Mdopahi, depicting one man seated holding a catlinite pipe, with a bone hair pipe warrior's breast plate strung on buckskin with brass beads; and the other wearing a full feather headdress, beaded moccasins, and leaning on U.S. light artillery saber. William Richard Cross (1839-1907) was successful in photographing many aspects of American Indian life that other white photographers had been unable to secure. Born in Vermont, he moved west in 1867. In 1878 he was photographing at the Spotted Tail Agency and in July moved his family and studio to Niobrara, Nebraska, also traveling to the Santee Agency. In 1890 he relocated to Hot Springs, S.D. Nice tones, clear details, and in excellent condition. Measures: 6.5" x 4.25." Price: 400.00
