1880s California Silver Lady Silhouette bit by Tom Hildreth (1856-1908) of Sacramento, California
This bit was previously thought to be made by Atanasio Larios of San Jose, California. Upon closer inspection of the maker mark and engraving, this bit has been positively identified by experts and family members to the famed California bit maker Thomas Hildreth (1856-1908). Few examples of his work exist today. Both Larios and Hildreth used very similar horse head maker marks when they worked for saddleries in San Jose, California. Hildreth placed his horse head mark inside an oval to differentiate his mark from Larios. In exceptional condition commensurate with its age. Clearly and boldly marked with two trademark horse heads inside a cartouch. This intricately engraved California 19th Century half-breed bit features old rein chains and iron slobber bar. Fine details include a beautiful side profile of a voluptuous lady with an alluring rear end, which I would refer to as “thicc”. This is a really unusual pattern, the only one like it that I have seen was in the collection of late bitmaker Chuck Irwin and was sold at auction in 2019 for $2200. The old roller was removed many years ago but would be an easy addition to the bit. Asking price is $1800 or best offer.
