¹ Charles Marion Russell (March 19, 1864 – October 24, 1926), oftentimes known as C.M. Russell, with the names Charlie Russell and “Kid” Russell having been applied to the artist as articles of camaraderie or mutual reciprocity; was an artist specializing in the reconstruction of the scenic majesty of the Old American West through personal experience and interpretation. Russell created more than 2,000 paintings of cowboys, Native Americans/ Indian tribesmen, and landscapes encompassing the western portion of the continental United States - as well as Alberta, Canada – with some of his most notable works being sculptures cast in bronze. The C.M. Russell Museum Complex situated in Great Falls, Montana houses 2,000 unique, and individually crafted pieces of the artist's personal work, historical memorabilia, and artifacts. A mural entitled 'Lewis and Clark Meeting the Flathead Indians' hangs in the state capitol building of Montana in the city of Helena, with one of Russell's more famous pieces, a 1918 painting entitled 'Piegans' having been sold for $5.6 million at a private auction in 2005.
