Early YUMA PRISON Braided Horsehair Bridle from Yuma, Arizona
Early YUMA PRISON Braided Horsehair Bridle from Yuma, Arizona
This 100% original and complete braided
horsehair bridle is an early example of
one made in the Yuma Prison. The hitched
reins and throatlatch on this bridle were
made using only the natural colors of black
and white horsehair. No rosettes are shown
on this piece, and only one tassel. On early
bridles, leather fastenings were often used
for bridle adjustments and attachment of
the bit, as is shown here in this bridle. The
original antique iron August Buermann bit is
marked on the mouthpiece and has the
characteristic Buermann roller. This Yuma
Prison bridle is prominently featured in the
book “HORSEHAIR BRIDLES, A UNIQUE
AMERICAN FOLK ART” by Ned and Jody
Martin, and can be found on page 50. Asking
