Antique Double Mounted Northern Plains style Spurs by Raphael (Filo) Gutierrez (1889-1958)
Double-mounted, silver inlaid Northern Plains style spurs with 14-point rowels, and tooled brown leathers affixed to 2 1/4" engraved silver domed conchos. Attributed to R.(Filo) Gutierrez. This pristine set of spurs is in outstanding condition. The custom basketweave straps were made by Union Leather Shop of Dubois Wyoming and are marked as such. The straps are accented by large, 2-1/4” hand rocker engraved domed silver conchos. Measurements: 7” long x 2-1/2” shanks x 2” rowels with a 3” heel opening.
Born in Northern California in 1889, by age 16 Raphael (Filo) was working as a bit and spur maker in Sacramento, California with Bernard Valenzuela. He later joined G S Garcia in Elko, NV in 1911 and is credited with the production of some of Garcia's finest work. In 1917 Gutierrez teamed up with Bill Phillips in Cheyenne, Wyoming for the short-lived but legendary partnership of Phillips & Gutierrez. Returning to Northern California in 1920, he joined Juan Estrada, and later worked from his San Francisco home at 1084 Le Conte Avenue until his death in 1958. Gutierrez made bits and spurs for Hamley, Olsen-Nolte, Fred Stern and G S Garcia. Asking 1800 obo.
