California style drop-shank spurs by Tom Hunt, circa 1915. These exquisite spurs are as rare as it gets. Tom was the uncle of renowned bit and spur maker A.B. Hunt, and is the mentor who taught him everything about bit and spur making. He operated a blacksmith shop in Arroyo Grande from 1887 until 1910 when he moved his shop to Gilroy. Tom taught Abbie the craft of bit and spur making and many of his influences are shown today in the work of A.B. Hunt. These spurs are a shining example of his work and trademark touches. Undulating and dotted leaf patterns engraved in the silver, finely filed striping on the beveled edges of the heel bands, the circular domed silver conchos securing the finely made rowels, and the decorative shape he used at the end of the heel bands, are all seen in his work.
